I have a question. My first thought was, "Wow, that sure looks like the Maserati Granturismo now:"
Which leads me to ask: why is this Maserati ~$150,000, but the equivalent Ferrari is twice that much? What parts from the bin are going into a Ferrari but not a Maserati that doubles the price? Is it just badge prestige? Surely not, right?

It is a one off project, based on the FF.
As Orlove wrote: "The SP stands for Special Projects these days (as opposed to Sports Prototype), Ferrari's in-house coachbuilding division that makes one-of-one customs. So far they've made the F430 SP1 , the 612 GTS Pavesi , the Superamerica 45 , the P540 Superfast Aperta , Eric Clapton's 458 SP12 , and the not-yet-public SP Arya "

I'm surprised Ferrari hasn't developed a car/program for testing twin-turbo V6s in street/track cars. I liked how the FXX and 599XX were test-beds for Ferrari tech like active aerodynamics and such that made its way into LaFerrari. Bring back the Dino!

I swear to God that this was my first reply to your post:
Where the heck did you dig that shit? That's not a car by Ferrari, but has to be some ignorant customization made by some disgraced dealer/importer...
But then I decided to keep my reply hanging, and I made a little GIS till I found this and it's not repeat IT'S NOT the "thecarspy.net" but some crappy "Auto-blog" website of some not better specified latin Country, who says that THIS IS NOT repeat THIS IS NOT a Ferrari prototype, but a one off model made on request of a Japanese customer. And this I believe, since I know what are the tastes of the Japanese, when car design and cars aesthetics are involved. Next time, please take a little more care in preparing your disputable scoops, thank you!
And since you're lazy and I'm proud of being a reliable news source, this is the Google translation of the post above:
The mystery is solved, the images declared to be of a new Ferrari , were not of a new Ferrari California but of a one-off (customization) for a Japanese client.
The information that I can tell is that the car is based on a FF, and the car seems to be especially for track use. The rest do I not know (yet).
Once I have more information and photos, I will update the news.
And this is the "Auto-blog" site.

In primis calm the f*ck down.
Second, You did not read this post.
I never said this is a pic of a prototype. It is stated on my post that this car is a "ONE OFF Ferrari made by in house Special Projects coachbuilding division" (as stated on Orlove linked post!)
Third, I am not a journalist and I do not aspire to be one. I just wanted to share a pic I saw on my twitter feed posted by thecarspy.net (usually a reliable source of information).
Fourth, you replied to a every comment, including one in which I wrote in simple and (hopefully) clear English that: "This isn't a trackday\development car like the FXX or the 599xx. It is a one off road car built for a wealthy client!"
Fifth, I have just included "one off" in the headline. Happy now?

It seems like the "clients" with these one offs don't have the aesthetic eye of the designers. The Aperta and The Eric Clapton car being exceptions. The clients tend to pick all sorts of designs and mismash them together, and the stylists can't really say no. Just look at that Dubai-Indian Billionaire's design for his 599 based car...you are left scratching your head.

I never have been too big on Maserati, but after I saw Maserati Granturismo in this amazing red in Barcelona I have been in love with it. That car really popped in this posh area with Ferraris and one Gallardo parked next to it. Curvy, not trying too hard and by no means brash.
How Ferrari's should be. It's so damn shame because Ferrari seems to get that back and side profile looking so great car after car and there's so much all around done right, but that damn front they have not been able to nail in years.

The Mythos was ugly too. Wasn't that for the Sultan of Brunei back int the 90s?
And they even said (they being driving instructors) that it's hard to tell the Sultan of Brunei that he is a bad driver.
Ferrari's ethos with these clients seems to be one of The Emperor has no clothes...the client gives the money, and the client has an idea, and the designers draw it and submit it to the client, and the client picks or critiques the different designs, and then wants others, then critiques those, then wants all of his ideas put together, so that it looks like a mash up of damn near every Ferrari made, and the client is Happy, but the designers are like "WTF is this shit?", but they can't say that, because $$$
This design could have been something, fixed that brace-face grille, and the white accents, and you are working with skmething.

Yeah, forgot about that. Glickenhaus had a certain vision. I think it's when the clients understand aesthetics, flow, design and history, is when the cars come out good. When you have rich clients who want a Ferrari version of a Go-Bot meets Gundam Wing that's when you start to have issues with cars being buttafaces.

Well Enzo was definitely a charismatic guy: either you loved him or hated him.
Personally I don't care, I judge a car company on the kind of car it produces. And Ferraris usually are wonderful cars (there are some exceptions, obv).
I don't like two of their practices:
- some v8 press cars were especially healthy (even if it is a much more common practice in the automotive industry)
- the Enzo\LF shortlist (you need to have bought certain Ferraris in order to get in)

The F12 is powered by a 6.3 liter V12 putting out 730 horsepower while the Maserati Granturismo MC Stradale (the most potent form of the Granturismo) has a 4.7 liter V8 with 460 hp. This one-off is a coupe so I assumed it was based on the F12, but apparently it's actually based on the FF (my mistake). The FF uses that same V12 (tuned to 650 hp) and is the first all wheel drive Ferrari ever made. The Ferraris compete with cars like the Aventador whereas the Maserati is in a lower class competing against the R8 and v8 vantage. Sorry about the first answer, I assumed you were trolling a bit and knew about the current Ferrari lineup since you were able to draw the comparison to a Maserati.

"THIS IS NOT repeat THIS IS NOT a Ferrari prototype,"
I don't see how anyone could have interpreted LOGOS's original post as such - he calls it a Special Project FFX, referencing a prior Orlove article, and nothing more.

Especially when they've been doing it for so long that it has kind of become expected of them.
I can see how Ferrari's attitude would piss people off. If I had worked hard to buy my first new Ferrari straight from a dealer I'd be pissed if they made me wait before I placed my order or said that I couldn't buy the model I wanted until I first bought a lower model. For me the individual it would be annoying.
The catch is that Ferrari is in a position right now where they do not have to care about the feelings of the moderately wealthy individuals. Quite the contrary - it actually helps them if some first time buyers walk away because their issue has become maintaining exclusivity in an era of massive global demand growth.
Ferrari's job right now is to cater to repeat buyers and the super rich and famous. They will continue to act like arrogant fashion designers until that stops working for them.

No problem. The Enzo and MC12 do share a chassis, but I'm not sure if there are any other examples. They have shared engine blocks before, but once again, this isn't something I'm too knowledgeable about. I do know that the new Maserati Ghibli is on a chassis that will be shared with the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger in the future, so I think the days of sharing Ferrari technology may be limited.

Yeah, I thought they shared a lot more technology too. Apparently Ferrari only owned Maserati from 1999 to 2005 (now they are both owned by Fiat), but Maserati was always its own company with separate designs. If you're ever bored, check out used Maserati prices. It's insane how much they depreciate.
